Choir

Boroughbridge Community Choir is a friendly group of singers who enjoy tackling all kinds of music. We sing everything from World Music (including African) through to folk songs, popular ballads, swing and jazz, songs from shows, novelty numbers and standard classics. We like a challenge occasionally and have successfully performed Bohemian Rhapsody on two occasions in the last 3 years, and highlights from Carmina Burana in June 2005.

The choir was started in 1991 under the direction of Nigel Beetles when they performed Handel’s Messiah. There have been a number of other conductors over the years, and I joined them as their Choral Director in September 2001 and they have put up with me ever since!

We usually perform two concerts per year, one at Christmas and the other in the Spring Term. The money raised goes to local charities and in the past we have supported Community Care, Jennyruth Workshop, Specialist Equipment for Doctors surgery, Springfield Garth, Gwendoline Court, Guide Dogs, School's Performing Arts Dept for costumes and musical aids, Antony Nolan Trust for local child Leukaemia sufferer, and Robert Hornby Trust, to name but a few.

We like to include local talent and dance groups and instrumentalists from Boroughbridge High School have joined our concerts on several occasions.

We are occasionally invited to sing at smaller events and in July 2005 we were very privileged to be asked to sing at the Boroughbridge Mayor Making Ceremony where we performed a small repertoire of unaccompanied songs.

We meet on Monday evenings from 7 – 9pm at Boroughbridge High School term time only from September to the end of May. New singers are always welcome – you do not necessarily need to be able to read music and there is no such thing as a “wrong note” – it is either “improvisation” or a “learning exercise”!! You will never be asked to sing on your own (unless you particularly want to) and we try to have a fun and enjoyable evening. We always start with a vocal warm up and you will learn some breathing and relaxation exercises and vocal technique to help you improve your singing.

So what are you waiting for? You can come along and sit in on a rehearsal if you wish so that you can see what you are letting yourself in for. For further information contact:
