Boroughbridge Poem

The poem was written by a group of Year 6 pupils at Boroughbridge primary school. They were thinking about the importance of community. It was written after the pupils looked at an aerial photograph of the town.

Our world is one huge sphere rotating in the darkness of outer space.
It is a bluey green marble on a black velvet cloth.
A little coloured bead on a dark carpet.
A fully inflated beach ball rolling round the galaxy.

Our world is made up of many different continents
With many different countries
Made up of many different communities.
Our community is one of these.

Let us look at Boroughbridge.
What do we see?
We see a patchwork quilt of fields.
The roads are the seams that attach all the parts to each other.
A blue ribbon of river worms its way to the sea.
Red and grey rooftops are clumped together like books on bookshelves.
The church tower stands tall and proud like a sentinel on guard.
St James’ Square lies at the centre of the town.

But where are the people?
There’s the vet helping to deliver lambs in an outlying farm.
Here’s a milkman whistling a happy tune as he delivers the milk to our doorsteps.
The postman is collecting Mrs Smith’s birthday cards to deliver to her door.
There’s the binman getting rid of the rubbish.
The barber sings happily as he trims and cuts your hair to your liking.
There’s the fireman preparing to rescue people from the blazing flames.
The doctor is busy in the surgery caring for patients and helping to make them better.
There’s the policeman patrolling the streets, making sure that there’s no trouble at all.
The shopkeeper has a cheery word for customers as he sells his goods.
The banker smiles as you hand over your money and open a new account.
There’s the roadsweeper picking up rubbish and helping to keep the streets clean.
The councillors are meeting to organise and plan all sorts for our town.

People all around,
Working together,
Helping each other,
Looking after others,
Cheering them up,
Lending a hand,
Working hard,
Giving,
Sharing,
Supporting,
Developing
Our community.

Our town,
Our home,
Boroughbridge.
