Ray Johnstone tragically lost his son Shaun on the 3rd September 1998 when he was only 16 years old.  Shaun died within five months after complaining to his GP about headaches and shaking in his left hand.  Unfortunately nothing was done and neither Shaun nor his parents were told of the possible connection.  The day before Shaun died 'psychosomatic' was written on his medical notes. 
 
Ray and Paula Johnstone now raise funds in memory of Ray’s son Shaun Johnstone.
 
Ray and Paula were moved by an article in a National paper about the Samantha Dickson Trust which was set up after the loss of Samantha Dickson.
 
The Samantha Dickson Research Trust ( www.sdrt.co.uk ) exists to find a cure for childhood and adult Brain Tumours through funding research and to offer support, hope and information to patients and their carers. Since it’s inception the Charity has become the largest single funder of laboratory based brain tumour research in the United Kingdom.
 
Subsequently Ray got in touch with the SDRT and set up the SDRT- Shaun Lee Johnstone Fund. Since March 2002 they have raised nearly £15,000 with the help of local people and business in and around Boroughbridge.  Brain Tumours are on the increase, killing more children and young adults than leukaemia.
 
The SDRT Shaun Lee Johnson Fund raises money in many ways which to date have included, participating in the La Trans Aq a 150 mile run in France,  running the Cleveland Way, running coast to coast, coffee mornings, fun weekends, talent nights sponsored bike rides etc.
